‘The Fresh Prince’ Star Alfonso Ribeiro Says the Reboot Will Be an Entirely Different Show

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is getting a dramatic reboot, simply called Bel-Air, and it sounds like it will have very little to do with the original series.

Will Smith announced last September that this new version of the ’90s sitcom, which he’s producing, is heading to US steaming service Peacock and has already been confirmed for two seasons.

The show, based on a mock YouTube trailer, will effectively dramatize Will’s original lead character moving from West Philadelphia to the much more lavish community of Bel-Air. Expect more emotion, less Carlton Dance.

Speaking of Carlton, the actor who played him – Alfonso Ribeiro – has now revealed a little more about the upcoming series.

“I like to call it a reimagining,” he told E! News. “We sometimes throw a lot of things into one word, one concept. A reboot would be taking the actual show and characters and bringing it back. This is a totally different show.

“It’s not even based on the show. It’s based on the theme song. It’s a completely different thing. It’s drama. It’s not comedy. I have nothing to do with it so I don’t really know anything more.”

However, Ribeiro went on to admit that he’s just as curious to see Bel-Air as the rest of us.

“I actually appreciate it even more than a reboot,” he said. “Let’s take a concept and turn it into a different show. I’m like, roll the dice. Go ahead and try it and see what happens.”

Ribeiro reunited with the Fresh Prince cast last year when they came together to reflect on the beloved sitcom that ran from 1990 to 1996.

The HBO Max special even saw Will Smith and the original Aunt Viv, Janet Hubert, bury the hatchet after a long-standing feud between the two.

The original Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
